Originally part of the original Wisconsin Territory, the Bettendorf was formally known as Lillienthal after an early tavern and dance hall. It wasn't until 1900 when the town sold 70 acres of land to brothers William and Joseph Bettendorf in agreement that they would move their iron wagon business to a area that would favor Lillienthal. Three years later, townspeople petitioned that the name of the town be changed to Bettendorf, to honor the brothers which have helped significantly develop the economy. Since then, Bettendorf continued to be prosperous aiding in future economic growth which is responsible for what the economy has become today.
